The End? Or A Different Sort of Beginning?

I’m almost done, but do not feel nearly complete
I’m having fun except that each time that I meet
A young woman who looks good and seems nice
I can’t help but think of somebody’s who’s twice
As great so I must leave before tears hit my feet

She was supposed to finish up her degree
This year and teach here and live with me
But we haven’t had any communication
For months since the new American Nation
Has a policy of hyper-aggressive isolation

War is never the answer – in this case it would be apocalyptic
Worse than the most gruesome battle scene painted on a triptych
But this can’t go on – there must be another way to attack
The Caliph basically bought his power so it can be bought back
Money is less tempting than power, but I bet the greatest high
The Caliph could feel is the knowledge that he will never die

But even if the immortality spheres prove to be a successful lure
Is the Caliph really America’s disease in need of a cure?
Usually when a dictator seeks to make the world his kiddie pool
There are underlying issues that lead his people to let him rule
In recent times all that worked was total national devastation
Followed by reconstruction with prolonged military occupation
And I doubt there is any nation or coalition that could hope
To conquer and occupy a country of such geographic scope

I can’t solve this alone – it is a job for many intelligent men
And women, so I must get this manuscript to the new U.N.
Where it should be read so that everyone there understands
About the spheres and why they can’t get into the wrong hands
Which means that they absolutely need to stay exactly where they are
Any step to harness their power by science would be a step too far

I don’t feel much less lost right now than I had been before
My adventures, which should have made me much more mature
I still have a quest – to get my story read
And I fear that it’s likely that I’ll fail
I’ll be optimistic instead - she’s probably not dead
And no one’s trying to put me in jail
